Other Post Activities

  1. Ask children to recite some of their favorite Mother Goose Rhymes. Read selection from Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes. Students could:

    • Practice some Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes for choral reading

    • draw a picture to illustrate a Chinese Mother Goose Rhyme

    • write their own mother goose rhymes

  2. Read and discuss traditional versions of Little Red Riding Hood and/or Cinderella, then read and discuss Lo Po Po a Riding Hood Story from China and/or Yeh-Shen a Story from China Compare and contrast traditional and Chinese versions.

  3. Ask students to pretend that they are accused witches. Tell them to write letters to loved-ones describing how they felt on the day of their trials and/or how it feels to be locked up in the witches' dungeon.

  4. Have students dress up as accused witches of Salem Village and plead their cases to fellow classmates.

  1. Have students respond to / discuss the following: - Explain the triangular trade and Salem's role in its development - Why did Tituba confess to witchcraft ? - Explain the concept of "spectral evidence" . How could you defend yourself against it?

  2. Use the witchcraft trials as an example of how fear, superstition, and lack of an appropriate civil justice system contributed to the persecution and execution of innocent people. Examine the issues of tolerance, bias, and civil rights in today's world.

  3. Expand upon the styles of architecture featured in the Interactive Area. Have students identify characteristics of each period and look for examples in their own community (You might consider a visit to the Essex Institute Site for actual models.)

  4. Explore the role that pirates played in the history of early Massachusetts Bay Colony

  5. Complete the anacrostics and word searches found elsewhere in this packet which cover the ideas, people, places, and things from the Salem Wax Museum.
