
Pre Visit Activities
Elementary
1. Read and Discuss Witch Hunt: It Happened in Salem Village by Stephen Krensky (Random House 1989) with class
2. Use classroom maps to locate Salem, Boston, England, The West Indies, and China.
3. The following vocabulary words should be introduced and discussed:

4. Use the enclosed black-lined master of the above vocabulary to have the students cut, categorize, and paste the words under the headings of "People, Places, and Things" or challenge students to create their own categories. (This activity can be done cooperatively in groups.)
5. Read The Willow Pattern Story by Allen Drummond (North-South Books 1992) to enrich the art activity of making their own Blue Willow plate in the interactive part of the museum.
Middle School
1. Use classroom maps to locate Salem, Boston, England, The West Indies, China, Russia, Batavia, Manila, London,
St.Petersburg, Rangoon, and Canton.
2. Explore and Explain the Triangular Trade. (An outline map has been included elsewhere in the packet.)
3. Read and Discuss Witch Hunt: It Happened in Salem Village by Stephen Krensky (Random House 1989) with class. Use the enclosed Action Story Map as a summary activity appropriate for cooperative, or individual efforts.
4. There is an enclosed Middle School Vocabulary sheet with vocabulary that will be used in the presentation. It would be helpful to the students if the vocabulary were reviewed.
5. Using the enclosed vocabulary list, have the students create lists of synonyms or antonyms.
High School
1. Review with the students the background material on Witchcraft and Early Trade that is included in this packet. (The Time Line contains additional information that may also be useful/interesting.)
2. Have students research the life and contributions/significance of one of the individuals featured at the museum and present the information to the class in an oral report. (Possible biographies include: Roger
Conant, Samuel Parris, Tituba, John Hathorne, Elias Hasket Derby, Philip English, Governor Sir William Phipps, Dorcas Good, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Elizabeth and John Proctor)
3. Have the students investigate the voyage of a ship leaving Salem. Find information on ports of call, destination, cargo, captain, daily routine of the crew, hazards faced etc.
4. Have the students complete a map of the triangular trade (map is included in the packet) - Some labels might include: Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Salem, Barbados, West Indies, North America, Africa, Europe.
5. Have the students complete a map, showing the route from Salem to the East Indies (a map is included in this packet) labeling some of the ports frequented by Salem Ships - A list of "places" referred to in the presentation is available on the "Places" Word Search found elsewhere in this packet.
